The next step is to ask Alexa to locate your devices after you’ve connected a smart home appliance or enabled a feature like Blink SmartHome. Because it enables Alexa to recognize and connect to a variety of smart devices, such as cameras, lights, plugs, thermostats, and more, this step is essential. That way, you can simply use your voice to control everything!
Here’s how to discover devices using the Alexa app:
- Open the Alexa App
Launch the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet. Make sure you’re signed in to your Alexa account and connected to Wi-Fi.
- Enable the Appropriate Skill
Before discovering certain devices, like Blink cameras, ensure the correct Alexa skill is enabled and your account is linked (e.g., Blink SmartHome skill for Blink devices).
- Go to “Devices”
Tap the “Devices” icon at the bottom of the screen. This opens the devices dashboard, where all your connected devices will be listed by type (e.g., Cameras, Lights, Plugs).
- Tap the “+” Icon
In the top-right corner of the screen, tap the “+” icon, then select “Add Device.”
- Select “Other” or Specific Device Type
You can choose a specific device type (like “Camera” or “Plug”) or tap “Other” if you’re not sure. Then, tap “Discover Devices.”
- Wait for Discovery to Complete
Alexa will begin scanning for nearby compatible smart devices. This process typically takes up to 45 seconds. Any discovered devices will be listed at the end of the scan.
- Assign Devices to Groups (Optional)
After discovering devices, you’ll be given the option to assign them to a room or group (e.g., “Living Room” or “Front Door”). This helps organize your setup and makes voice control more natural.
- Test Voice Commands
Once discovery is complete, try using a command like “Alexa, show the front door camera” or “Alexa, turn on the living room lights.”
Device discovery is essential for Alexa to manage your smart home effectively—and it only takes a minute to complete.
9.Name and Group Your Camera (Optional)
Once Alexa finds your smart home camera (like a Blink or Ring device), you can group and name it. Natural voice commands such as “Alexa, turn off all devices in the living room” or “Alexa, show the backyard camera” make it easier for you to control your gadgets.
Here’s how to name and group your camera using the Alexa app:
1. Open the Alexa App
Launch the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet. Make sure you’re signed in and your camera has already been discovered by Alexa.
2. Go to the Devices Tab
At the bottom of the home screen, tap “Devices.” This shows a dashboard of all your connected smart devices, organized by type.
3. Select “Cameras”
From the top menu, scroll to and tap “Cameras.” Here you’ll see a list of all cameras connected to your Alexa account.
4. Choose Your Camera
Tap on the camera you want to rename or group. This opens its device settings page.
5. Rename the Camera
Tap “Edit Name” (or just the current name, depending on your app version). Enter a new name that’s easy to remember and say—for example, “Front Door,” “Backyard,” or “Garage.” Tap Save when finished.
6. Add to a Group (Optional)
To add the camera to a group, go back to the Devices screen, tap “Groups” and choose an existing group or tap “Create a Group.” Select the devices—including your camera—you want in that group (e.g., “Living Room” or “Outdoor Cameras”), then tap Save.
7. Test the New Name
To make sure Alexa understands the new name and group, try a voice command like “Alexa, show the backyard camera” or “Alexa, what’s happening in the garage?”
Voice control and organization are enhanced by naming and grouping your cameras, particularly if you own several smart devices.
- Use Alexa Voice Commands
Alexa voice commands allow you to quickly and hands-free control your smart home devices. You can control your home with simple spoken commands once your Alexa device is configured and connected to your smart devices, such as thermostats, smart lights, or Blink cameras.
Here’s how to use Alexa voice commands effectively:
1. Wake Alexa
Start by saying the wake word, usually “Alexa.” You can change the wake word in the Alexa app if you prefer “Echo,” “Alexa,” or “Computer.”
2. Basic Commands
Ask Alexa simple questions or commands like:
- “Alexa, what’s the weather?”
- “Alexa, set a timer for 10 minutes.”
3. Control Your Cameras
If your Blink or other compatible cameras are linked, use commands like:
- “Alexa, show me the front door camera.” (for devices with a screen, like Echo Show or Fire TV)
- “Alexa, arm my Blink system.”
- “Alexa, show the backyard camera on Fire TV.”
4. Control Smart Home Devices
Use commands for lights, plugs, thermostats, and more:
- “Alexa, turn on the living room lights.”
- “Alexa, set the thermostat to 72 degrees.”
- “Alexa, turn off the kitchen plug.”
5. Use Groups and Device Names
Alexa responds better when devices have simple names and are grouped logically. For example:
- “Alexa, turn off all lights.”
- “Alexa, dim the bedroom lights to 50%.”
- “Alexa, show the garage camera.”
6. Create Routines for Automation
You can set up routines in the Alexa app to automate multiple actions with a single command. For example, saying “Alexa, good night” could turn off lights, lock doors, and arm your security cameras.
7. Tips for Clear Commands
Speak clearly and naturally. Use device names you assigned to avoid confusion.
Using Alexa voice commands is a hands-free, convenient way to interact with your smart home. With practice, it becomes second nature to ask Alexa for what you need.
